"Expanding the Vision" - Kernerville Magazine - June 2012
Five years ago, Dr. Amy and Overton Harper brought to
Kernersville their vision for family eye care. Their practice
Harper Eye Care—included the very latest optometry equipment
in a family-friendly setting. Most importantly, though, it was
founded on a genuine fondness for people and an insatiable desire
to get to the bottom of stubborn health issues.
Apparently, this is the right recipe for Kernersville because Harper Eye Care is now
bursting at the seams, and it is easy to see why.
Ann Emmerich came into the office after having suffered for 36 years with migraine
headaches. Dr. Amy Harper listened to her considerable health history and then
carefully examined her eyes. What she found was a bulging optic nerve in the left

A New Look at Optometry
- by Patty Jo Sawvel
According to Dr. Amy Harper - who is opening
an optometry practice in Kernersville - there is more
to optometry than glasses and contacts.
"While examining a person's eyes,"
said Dr. Harper, "an optometrist can detect up
to 80% of all systemic diseases, including diabetes,
high blood pressure, cancer, AIDS/HIV, arthritis, and
irritable bowel syndrome."
About two years ago, Dr. Harper had a
patient who complained of chronic headaches, dizzy spells,
and tingling in her arms and legs. Dr. Harper did a
full eye exam that included a visual field test. As
a result of that exam, she flagged the possibility of
multiple sclerosis. She referred the patient to a neurologist
and a couple of weeks later she received a report that
confirmed her suspicions. (Full
